Listen here to the memorial song performed by Ilkka Vainio himself.

Lyricist-musician Ilkka “Ile” Vainio made Hamina’s walrus his own song. He performs it live at Kotka sea days.

Vainio reveals to Iltalehti that the song was created due to a request for an order. It was definitely an honor for him to do that.

– I heard that I have to make a song about a walrus. It touched people. I connected the song’s message to Hamina and when it went from there. The carpet stand is mentioned, Vainio says about his lyrics.

Vainio wrote the song to suit his father Juha Vainio Old boys with mustaches – to the melody of the song. However, he reveals that the lyrics can be adapted to the melodies of other songs.

– The lyrics are a tribute to Mursu and Patu. Patu is a sailor from Hamina, on whose ship the walrus memorial service is held. Patu Patanen’s ship is a 100-year-old lighthouse ship.

The lyrics are also a message for nature. Vainio wants to emphasize the walrus in it, because it brought everyone the joy of nature and touched many. Everyone hoped that the walrus would have survived.

At the Kotka Sea Days, the wild walruses of Finns get their own opportunity on board, where Vainio performs his walrus song.

– It was good for Mursu to have his own song, Vainio emphasizes.
