A few days after the separation from Wim Fisette, Iga Świątek presents a new coach. And he is no stranger to the tennis scene.
With a change in the coaching bench, tennis star Iga Świątek is sending a new signal for her sporting future. In the future, the Pole will work with an experienced coach who has been at Rafael Nadal’s side for many years.
The six-time Grand Slam winner has introduced Francisco Roig as her new coach. The 24-year-old, who is currently in a sporting crisis, wants to build on previous successes with the Spaniard.
Świątek wrote on Instagram: “Welcome to the team, Francisco! I’m looking forward to this new chapter.” Roig was part of Nadal’s coaching team from 2002 to 2022, who won a total of 22 Grand Slam titles. Most recently, the 58-year-old looked after several professionals at the same time. The Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard hired him at the beginning of March; he previously worked with the British Emma Raducanu until the beginning of the year.
Świątek separated from Wim Fissette on March 23rd. The decision followed the surprising exit in the first round of the Masters tournament in Miami. During the 18 months working with the Belgian, the former number one won, among other things, the Wimbledon tournament last year – her last Grand Slam title to date.
Regarding the separation from Fissette, who once also worked with top German players Sabine Lisicki and Angelique Kerber, Świątek said: “After many months of working together, I have decided to take a different path. Thank you, Coach, for the time and the lessons I learned from you.” So now the new beginning with Roig.
