MUNICH (dpa-AFX) – With rising energy prices, the number of short-time workers in Germany more than doubled again this autumn. This affects the industry above all, as the Munich Ifo Institute reported on Friday. According to this, the total number of employees on short-time work rose from 76,000 to 187,000 from August to November. It was largely industrial companies that applied for short-time work: According to the Ifo, the number of short-time workers rose from 59,000 to 151,000.

“In particular, the energy-intensive industries and the automotive industry are increasingly resorting to short-time work again,” said Ifo researcher Sebastian Link.

Compared to the situation a year ago, which was severely affected by the pandemic, the total number of short-time workers is much lower than in November 2021. At that time, companies had registered short-time work for 750,000 employees. The estimate is based on surveys by the Ifo Institute in the German economy and figures from the Federal Employment Agency./cho/DP/mis
