The website of the “Tattoo LL” studio in Bern states: “Our goal is to increase people’s self-expression and self-confidence through our tattoo art.” In order to put this beautification work into lists and figures, the Swiss decided to conduct their own study.
Scientific question: Which rock band inspires the most to get a tattoo?
The basis for this was the search volume data from Google’s Keyword Planner. Anyone who expected a march from one to ten of various metal bands had to be proven wrong.
“The Dark Side of the Moon” pyramid
At number one in the Swiss study, with over 13,000 monthly, international tattoo searches, are the prog rock masters Pink Floyd. Their “The Dark Side of the Moon” pyramid and other works by the design studio Hipgnosis from the 1970s and 1980s are apparently still in great demand and can also be implemented well on the skin and boost self-confidence.
In second place are (not surprisingly) Guns N’ Roses with around 10,600 searches. Of particular note here is the iconic cross on the cover of “Appetite for Destruction”, which was specially created by the late tattoo legend Billy White, Jr.
The industrial metallers from Rammstein with their R-beam cross and other hard-core look came in third place with 10,500 searches.
For “LLTattoo’s” mentor Deday, rock music and ink seem “inextricably linked, and tattoos are almost mandatory for big rock fans. After tattooing people with many of these artists’ designs in our studio, some of the results are not surprising. However, there are also some interesting bands included in the top ten, as well as some that surprisingly didn’t make the list.”
Incidentally, the results of LLTattoo confirm a similar study by the ticket service “TicketSource” from 2023, in which Pink Floyd was also named as the most popular tattoo rock band in the search results, followed here by Slipknot.
This survey went beyond rock music and also included the K-pop band BTS, Harry Styles and Rihanna among very popular stitch motifs.
