Ice rink Kardinge in Groningen can open again after a leak. GIJS relieved, Saturday’s ice hockey match continues

The ice rinks of the Kardinge sports center in Groningen will open again on Saturday morning. A major leak in the technical room has kept the two halls closed since Monday.

The closure is therefore still relatively short. Parts that were rendered unusable by the burst pipe were partly in stock or could be delivered and replaced quickly. The fear that the ice rink could remain closed for weeks had thus subsided.

That was a relief for, among others, head of technical service Kees Ennema and ice master Jan Schuur. The temperature was still unsightly on Monday night. At that time, it remained 10 degrees above zero, which meant that the open outer walls remained too warm for the already melting ice. Last night it was colder and the ice ‘thawed’ less quickly.

GIJS can just play his match

On Wednesday they worked with all their might to thicken the ice and restore the worn lines. The fact that this succeeds on time is also a stroke of luck for ice hockey club GIJS. A home game is scheduled for Saturday. Now that the club does not have to move, a few boxes of cakes for the ice rink staff could be delivered.
