Austria’s ice hockey national team made the leap into a World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in 31 years.
The team of coach Roger Bader defeated 6: 1 (1: 0, 2: 1, 3: 0) in the last preliminary round game of group A in Stockholm Latvia and thus secured the last place in the quarter -finals. In Group B, Sweden, Canada and Finland also qualified for the round of the last eight.
1994: Germany thrown out
Dominic Zwerger (18./53.), Benjamin Baumgartner (24th), Vinzenz Rohrer (26th/58th) and Thomas Raffl (45th) scored the goals for Team Austria. Eduards Tralmaks (29th) scored for the Latvians.
Austria had last reached the quarter -finals at the 1994 World Cup in Italy and thus thrown the German team out of the tournament, but then resigned against Finland with a 0:10.
