Goal for the Czech Republic, 0-1 by David Pastrňák

Then the top stars strike. Roman Červenka leads the puck in the right face-off circle, David Krejčí plays in the middle. He could actually shoot, plays wonderfully further to the left to David Pastrňák. As a result, Philipp Grubauer is no longer in the position. And the Boston Bruins striker has a clear path into the near corner.

The top Czech line stays on the ice and settles down permanently in the attacking zone. David Pastrňák, for example, has been constantly on the ice since the beginning.

Minor penalty (2 minutes) for Yasin Ehliz (Germany)

As disciplined as the Germans have been at work in the tournament so far, today there is an early penalty after half a minute. Yasin Ehliz takes the disc in his own zone uncleanly, then puts his stick between David Pastrňák’s legs and has to go to the penalty box.

As expected, the goalkeepers, who have emerged from the regular goalies in the course of the tournament so far, start between the posts. On the German side this is of course Philipp Grubauer, on the Czech side Karel Vejmelka from the Arizona Coyotes.

Mikael Nord from Sweden and Miroslav Stolc from Switzerland will ensure order on the ice. Linespersons Maxime Chaput from Canada and Šimon Synek from Slovakia assist the two referees.

With six world championship titles and the Olympic victory in 1998, the Czech Republic is one of the great ice hockey nations. However, it has now been ten years since there was precious metal for the last time. Therefore, there is a lot of catching up to do, but whether one is ready for great deeds again at this World Cup could not be fully proven during the preliminary round. As a result, the Czechs are only slightly favored today.

15:11

Statistically, the Czechs are at best above average and do not stand out in the special teams or in terms of scoring efficiency. Roman Červenka, on the other hand, is conspicuous, who led the scorer list for a long time and is currently second behind Denis Malgin from Switzerland with eleven points. When it comes to the playing times of his players, Kari Jalonen follows the typical Finnish approach, distributing them quite evenly like his counterpart Söderholm or Finland coach Jukka Jalonen.

15:02

The Czech Republic had to be satisfied with third place in group B. After the 5-1 win against Great Britain, Kari Jalonen’s team was immediately ranked north by the Swedes (3:5). This was followed by an unexpected bankruptcy against Austria (1:2 after a penalty shoot-out). After that, however, the Czechs secured their place in the quarter-finals by beating Latvia (5-1), Norway (4-1) and the USA (1-0). At the end of the preliminary round, however, Olympic champion Finland showed the limits (3:0).

In addition, the German team impressed with their unusual scoring touch. In terms of shooting efficiency, they are still number 1 at this World Cup. The power play also went brilliantly, the eight goals in the majority were not surpassed by any other team. Only when they were outnumbered did the Germans not get involved at the very front, and as the fairest team of the tournament with only 15 two-minute penalties, they were rarely challenged in penalty killing. In addition, Toni Söderholm spreads the responsibility over many shoulders, so not only the NHL stars are in demand. This can be seen from the fact that, with the exception of Korbinian Holzer, all field players have scorer points. Furthermore, only Moritz Seider got more than 20 minutes ice time on average. Here, too, the loads are distributed very well.

14:42

With their impressive appearance, the German national ice hockey team knew how to please in the course of this tournament. Although the start went wrong, you didn’t look good against the Canadians at first, but the DEB selection already knew how to increase in this encounter. Nevertheless, it was a 3:5 defeat. However, the Germans then started a winning streak, defeating Slovakia (2-1), France (3-2), Denmark (1-0), Italy (9-4) and Kazakhstan (5-4). That put Toni Söderholm’s men in a position to play against Switzerland to win the group. You should have won in regular time, but only managed a 3:3 and then lost in a penalty shootout. Nevertheless, second place in Group A can be seen as a great success.
