Andreas Eder changes to the Eisbären Berlin – the last club of his late brother Tobias. He reveals moving details.
The change from Andreas Eder to the Eisbären Berlin is much more than a new start to sport for the ice hockey professional. After the death of his brother Tobias, the 29-year-old feels a special closeness to his new club. “For me it feels like I was coming home. Because there was so much cohesion and support in the past year, beyond the normal,” Eder told the Tagesspiegel.
In January, Tobias Eder died of esophageal cancer at the age of only 26. On July 12th, Andreas Eder made his change from Munich to the capital – exactly on the day that Tobias had married. “Of course it was a difficult day for all of us, but we found it right that something good would happen,” he said in retrospect.
Even before Tobias’ illness, the brothers had often exchanged their polar bears. “Before he got sick, it was also our dream to play together again. Of course, nobody knows where this place would have been,” said Eder.
In Berlin, the memory of his brother will be a constant companion for Andreas Eder. In the future, he will be sitting in the cabin on the square that Tobias once took. “That was the idea of our team supervisor and I was happy to accept this offer,” said the attacker.
His brother will also be visible to him on the ice. As Eder reveals the “picture”, he has a breast protection with the lettering “Tobi” and his earlier rear number 22 under his jersey.
The Eisbären Berlin had dedicated their title win last season to Tobias Eder. His fiancee accepted the master medal, the players posed with a jersey of the deceased. The death of the former professional had caused great sympathy across Germany.
