Ice hockey, Olympic Milan risks losing the Hockey Club: fans mobilized

Unsustainable costs, appeal to Fontana and Sala: on Saturday the party for what may be the last challenge

Milan has just received the Olympic flag and is preparing to live the 4 years that separate it from its Winter Olympics with enthusiasm and trepidation. In the meantime, at the end of the year, work should start on the new Palasport in Santa Giulia, which will host the ice hockey tournament in 2026.

The appeal

Yeah, hockey. The sport of ice with the most glorious tradition, in the city, thanks above all to the Hockey Club Milano, the oldest Italian club of skates and sticks. It will turn 98 on March 10, and boasts an inimitable palmarès in our country: 25 scudetti, 5 Italian cups, 3 Supercoppe, 2 Spengler Cup, 2 Serie A2 championships and two B championships to which the Champions Cup finals of the 1991 and of the Continental Cup in 2001 and 2004. But after the glories of the recent past (the last triumph was the 2015-16 Italian Cup) the Hockey Club Milano Bears fell into a progressive economic difficulty that today forces it to play in the IHL Division 1 (a sort of Serie C): despite the fall, the fans continue to follow her by the thousands. But the fate of the Hockey Club Milano Bears is very much at risk, because the operating costs are becoming unsustainable, as confirmed by the president Pompeo Guarneri: “We have requested in every way to be able to meet the institutions, from Governor Fontana to Mayor Sala, to involve them in the difficult economic situation in which the company finds itself. Hockey is a sport that must be protected and subsidized because it is in fact an uneconomical sport for a city. But the hypothesis, now almost a certainty, is that Milan won’t sign up for the next championship and it would be paradoxical that a few days after the Olympic flag is handed over to our club’s flag “. The fans hope that the cry for help will sensitize the best energies in the city to protect the sports law and the popular heritage that the club has represented. Meanwhile, La Curva is preparing on Saturday (Agorà, 20.30) to celebrate with a big party what is likely to be Milan’s last match.
