“I still drive a Renault, but no longer past the factory”: trade unionist Raymond looks back on the blow that Vilvoorde received 25 years ago

The closure of the Renault factory in Vilvoorde in 1997 is exactly 25 years ago on Sunday. It was a bolt from the blue for the 3,000 employees, but not for Raymond Smeulders, chief representative for ABVV at Renault. He looks back with us on the turbulent period. “After all this time, the employees still often meet up via Facebook,” he says. “We remain one big family, the closure has not changed that.”
