Merry festivities throughout the Netherlands because today Sinterklaas arrives in the country. Drenthe has certainly not been forgotten, in his packed agenda Santa will visit several cities and villages today.

This is also the case in Assen. The good saint moored there at around 12.45 pm at the Kop van de Vaart, where deputy mayor Jan Broekema and children’s mayor Felice gave him and his many helpers a warm welcome.

The arrival was traditionally full of music, dance and of course: gingerbread. Together with hundreds of Piets, decorated floats and several music bands, Saint Nicholas went on a parade through the center of Assen. After the parade, the party continued on Koopmansplein.

Our photographer Kim Stellingwerf was there and took these beautiful, cheerful pictures despite the drizzly weather.
