A large number of employees at high-tech company ASML from Veldhoven have health problems after working with a face mask in a cleanroom. Research by the FNV trade union shows that 90 percent of employees suffer from headaches and breathing problems, among other things.

800 people took part in the study, which consisted of a questionnaire that the union distributed among employees. Of the people who completed the questionnaire, 700 people indicated that they had complaints. Most people have multiple complaints at the same time, reports Studio040.

Headache, breathing problems and fatigue are the most common complaints. Employees who wear a face mask for more than six hours a day in particular seem to have these complaints. The solution according to the FNV is better and more targeted ventilation of the clean rooms. These are very clean and dust-free workplaces.

‘Face mask break’
The problem therefore does not lie with that workplace, but with the face masks. That is why we are examining whether its use can be reduced. A regular ‘face mask break’ could also reduce complaints, according to the association.

ASML states that the face mask policy has been developed in consultation with employees and the works council and that the working method is regularly evaluated. In some cases, employees can also be exempt from the face mask requirement, but this is only possible in some clean rooms.

Discussion about possible next steps
Stricter rules apply at the EUV factory, where the latest machines are made, and face masks cannot be removed. “Our systems must be produced in ultra-clean environments to prevent damage to the sensitive machines,” says an ASML spokesperson. “Our employees are also aware of this.”

Yet there is also understanding for the complaints. “We understand that wearing face masks can be difficult and that some colleagues have therefore raised concerns about health and wellbeing. We also recognize the need, as indicated by FNV, to further investigate any health risks associated with wearing face masks. We are currently reviewing their findings and will invite FNV for a discussion on possible next steps.”
