A massive virtual trial of hundreds of alleged gang leaders kicked off Thursday at El Salvador’s infamous CECOT mega-prison. Images show the suspects, handcuffed and ankled, sitting in rows in front of a television. The 486 suspects are being held in five prisons, most of them in CECOT, the high-security facility that opened in 2023 under President Nayib Bukele and has become a symbol of El Salvador’s massive crackdown on gang violence.
