Several photos of the animal have been posted on the observation.nl website. Also were coordinates sharedwhich shows that the humpback whale swam close to the South Pier.
“You can recognize a humpback whale by the hump in front of the dorsal fin,” an SOS Dolfijn employee previously told NH. “When they come to the surface they always blow out and then water that is still on that hole shoots up.”
Humpback whales can be seen more often
Humpback whales have been appearing more and more often off the Dutch coast in recent years. The animal was also seen off the coast of Egmond aan Zee during Christmas. A few weeks ago another one was spotted near Ameland.
According to SOS Dolfijn, humpback whales are ‘adventurous whales that have been seen more and more often off the Dutch coast in recent years’. The animals can grow to more than fifteen meters in length.
SOS Dolfijn advises you to report a sighting, but to keep your distance and not to go on the water.
