Hamburg (dpa-AfX)-The huge shopping mall Westfield Hamburg-Übersekartier with numerous leisure activities opens its doors on Tuesday afternoon. The official opening with Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) and invited guests is planned at 2:30 p.m. From 4:00 p.m., all visitors can come to the large area in one of the many restaurants.
According to the operator Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (Unibail-Rodamco) (URW), over half of the brands and concepts represented in the neighborhood are not yet represented in downtown Hamburg. A third is not yet located in the Hanseatic city. URW expects 16 million visitors annually in the medium term.
Persistent problems on the construction site had led to a multiple shift of the opening date, and the costs also climbed. URW recently put the total investments at 2.45 billion euros.
Urw had been sharply criticized in the past because of the conditions on the construction site. In October 2023, five workers died in one of the most serious accidents of work in Hamburg. Among other things, because of these incidents, IG Bau Hamburg has invited a protest campaign on the edge of the opening under the motto “Your Mall – Our Grave”.
The Westfield Hamburg-Übersekartier is said to have a floor area of 419,000 square meters. 170 areas for retail, gastronomy and leisure are planned.
