Scover traces of a distant past it’s not just the privilege of films. In the heart ofOxfordshirea worker came across something extraordinary: the largest dinosaur footprint site ever found in the UK. A fortuitous encounter, but destined to revolutionize our understanding of Middle Jurassic. Between craters in the limestone and breathtaking discoveries, paleontology celebrates a moment of glory.

Thousand-year-old traces reveal giants of the past

The footprintsabout 200date back to 166 million years ago. “It’s one of the most impressive sites I’ve ever seen,” she says Professor Kirsty Edgar of the University of Birmingham. These marks, up to wide two feet (about 600 cm), tell the movements of two species: the Cetiosaurusa long-necked herbivorous sauropod, and the Megalosaurusan agile predator. The longest footprints measure 150 metersand experts speculate that they could extend further under the still unexplored terrain.

The worker who changed history

Gary Johnsona worker at the Dewars Farm quarry, was the first to notice strange anomalies in the soil. «I thought they were just humps in the groundbut then I realized that they were repeated regularly”, he says. This surreal moment led to one unprecedented excavation: more than 100 scientists, students and volunteers they explored the site for months, discovering five different tracksincluding the iconic one three-toed Megalosaurus.

When giants crossed paths

One of the most fascinating aspects is the overlap of the footprints: The sauropod appears to have trod the mud before the Megalosaurus, which it left clearly recognizable signs on them. “It’s like an open window into prehistoric life,” explains Professor Richard Butler.
This site is more than a find: it is a journey through time.
