Bundesliga

As of: May 1, 2026 7:09 p.m

The HSV footballers suffered a bitter setback in the Bundesliga in the fight to stay in the league. Hamburg unfortunately lost 0-1 (0-0) against Union Berlin on Friday afternoon. There were also concerns about defender Magou Doucouré after the game.

by Tobias Knaack

Especially in the first section, the HSV women were the much better team, were strong runners and were poisonous in the duels. Only the exploitation of opportunities left something to be desired – and that took its toll. Amber Tysiak scored the goal of the day for the guests (60th) and turned the game on its head.

The Hamburgers missed out on taking a decisive step towards staying in the Bundesliga a week after the 1-0 away win on coach Rodolfo Cardoso’s debut in Nuremberg. The lead over SGS Essen, which hosts fifth-placed Leverkusen on Sunday (2 p.m.), is still three points.

The Hamburg team continues next Saturday with a guest appearance at 1. FC Cologne (12 p.m., in the NDR Livecenter), before champions Bayern Munich come to the Hanseatic city on the last match day (May 17th).

HSV women exploit opportunities

It took around a quarter of an hour before the game in the Volksparkstadion got going – and the hosts had their first great opportunity. Striker Christin Meyer headed the ball towards the goal after a corner from the right side, but Cara Bösl made a strong save on the line (16th). And just four minutes later, the Union keeper was there again to counter Meyer’s header.

Either the aluminum or Union keeper Cara Bösl stood in the way of the HSV women scoring on Friday.

Shortly afterwards, the Berliners, who had more possession of the ball, had their supposed lead called back after a free kick because of a foul (22′). But the Hamburg team remained more dangerous, as they finally had to worry about not being in the lead after a quadruple chance. Mia Büchele first put a free kick from the left side onto the right inside post – and then the Bösl show continued, parrying the shots from Paulina Bartz, Svea Stoldt and Pauline Machtens within a few seconds (28th).

Tysiak scores from the fray

Hamburg’s proliferation of opportunities continued after the break. This time Bösl dropped a free kick cross, but Sophie Hillebrand put the ball next to the goal (51′). A little later, the guests also became dangerous out of the game: Lea Paulick parried Jenny Hipp’s slightly deflected shot (57th).

But three minutes later she was beaten. First, she held strong after a free kick cross and directed the ball onto the post. She was also on Tysiak’s follow-up shot, but the ball was behind the line – 0:1.

Opportunities for compensation remain unused

The Cardoso team had to recover from the shock for ten minutes and had another goal through Bartz. Her arc lamp hit the crossbar (70′). The approximately 8,600 fans in the arena whipped their team to Vone. Camilla Linberg fired two long-range shots over the goal (72nd and 76th), Annaleen Böhler didn’t put enough pressure behind her header (81st).

And when Vildan Kardesler, who had recently been substituted, hit the left post after a strong solo (88′) and an attempt from Meyer landed at the right post (90’+7), defeat was certain.

Doucouré collapses on the grass

Hamburg’s fears of relegation are still great, but they faded into the background immediately after the final whistle when defender Doucouré, who was substituted in the 84th minute, collapsed. The 25-year-old Frenchwoman had to be treated on the pitch and was taken to hospital.

According to the HSV, Doucouré was already responsive and stable when he was transported from the Volksparkstadion grounds. “We are all still shocked by this incident. In moments like this you realize what is most important. The health of the players is the only thing that matters – everything else doesn’t matter today,” explained board member Eric Huwer. He continued: “We are relieved that the initial feedback is cautiously positive. We keep our fingers crossed, think of Magou and hope that she gets back on her feet quickly.”
