Football fans in Germany had to wait seven and a half years for Hamburger SV and Werder Bremen to compete against each other again in the Bundesliga. On Sunday (3:30 p.m.) the time has finally come. The traditional northern derby between the founding members of the Bundesliga has not taken place in the German upper house of football since February 2017. In the last first division duel to date between Hamburg and Bremen, Werder had the upper hand and happily won 1-0 after a late own goal from then HSV professional Rick van Drongelen.
As is well known, at the end of this season the Rothosen were relegated to the Bundesliga for the first time.
Since then, there have only been two more duels between the two traditional clubs to this day, namely in 2021/2022. At that time, both HSV and Werder were known to be competing in the 2nd Bundesliga. The Hanseatic League’s only second division duel ended with an away win for HSV (2:0) and Werder (3:2).
