HSV: Bénes “knew that it would take a while” – home weakness coincidence

Ex-Gladbacher about adjustment problems

New signing László Bénes sees himself at Hamburger SV in the second division after initial adjustment problems, but at the same time he still sees room for improvement. “I think I played a very good preparation. Nevertheless, it took a little time before the automatism was there again – from what the coach wanted, the game idea and the game system. I knew it would take a while. I was willing to do that, and I spoke to the coach about it,” said the midfielder in an interview “Picture”.

With a transfer fee of 1.5 million euros, the Slovakian became the most expensive and at the same time most valuable purchase in the German lower house for the 2022/23 season. So far, the professional has appeared 15 times for HSV, providing two goals and four assists. Coach Tim Walter knows Bénes from his loan spell at Holstein Kiel, when he played 16 games for the “Storks” (two goals, six assists) in the second half of 2018/19.

After the 3:2 in the top game at SC Paderborn, the trainer said: “László did really well. At the beginning he still had a bit of a problem with our philosophy. But he never complained and always tried to improve in training. He brings us a lot of energy onto the pitch. It’s simply fun.”

Bénes now explained: “I had to be patient, now I feel really good. My last three or four games have been good. But I think that’s just the beginning, because I always want to improve.” On Sunday at 1.30 p.m., second in the table and favorite for promotion awaits SSV Jahn Regensburg. While Hamburg won six out of seven games abroad and are thus in first place, in front of their own fans in the always well-filled Volksparkstadion they only managed three threes in seven attempts and in return three defeats against Hansa Rostock, Darmstadt 98 and promoted Magdeburg – 13th place in the home table.

Bénes has no explanation for the much better away games. “I think it’s a coincidence. I think playing in front of more than 50,000 spectators in our stadium is outstanding. (…) I think it’s the game of the year for the opponents at the Volksparkstadion and sometimes it’s the details that make the difference,” said the left-footed player, who answered “yes” when asked whether HSV had the strongest team in the second division.
