Google has announced that from January 2024 it will eliminate a view that is quite popular. TECHBOOK tells you which users are affected and how you can continue to use them.

Almost 20 years ago, the search engine giant Google presented its web-based email service Gmail. The use was and still is very clear and simple. For older browsers and slow internet connections, Google still offers the Basic HTML view for Gmail. However, this will be phased out from January 2024 or will automatically switch to the modern standard version, as Google announced on its support page.

Basic HTML view does not support new features

In contrast to the standard view, users have to forego a number of features in the pure HTML version. Among other things, the following functions are not offered in the Basic HTML version of Gmail:

  • Spell checker
  • Contact synchronizations
  • Rich text formatting
  • Chat
  • Etc.

Google is removing the HTML view from Gmail without replacing it

From January 2024, the email service will automatically redirect to the standard view as the only viewing option. Google notes that users may need to update their browser to use this view. The company also recommends that smartphone owners download the Gmail app.

An alternative to updating the browser is to use a desktop email client. Gmail accounts can be integrated and used in Mozilla Thunderbird and Microsoft Outlook.

This is how you can (still) use the HTML view of Gmail

In addition to the classic mail function, Gmail also offers many other things, such as the calendar, notes, etc. If you can do without that and just want to check your emails, you can do so in the HTML view. But even if you have a very poor internet connection or your browser does not support the modern Gmail version, you can still switch to the pure HTML view until January 2024.

PC and laptop

All you need to do is use the simple HTML login for Gmail for PC or laptop Open it in your browser on your PC or laptop. A new tab will then open asking “Are you sure you want to use the HTML version of Gmail?” Then click on the button with “I want to use the HTML version of Gmail”.

If you are in the Basic HTML version, you can also switch back to the modern view. To do this, all you have to do is scroll all the way down and click on “Gmail View: Standard” in the yellow box.
