Solve a Rubiks cube as quickly as possible. Maybe in a world record. In Meppel a competition will be held here in the weekend of 17 and 18 May. This happens under the watchful eye of the World Cube Association, the worldwide sports association behind Rubiks Kubus competitions.

The current world record is 4.03 seconds, in the name of the Chinese Yiheng Wang. The personal record of the Dutch Yinte Dik is 12.5 seconds. She is in the organization of the competition that will be in the Topsporthal Ezinge in Meppel next month.

Solve a whole weekend of rubik cubes, “that’s because there are so many different parts”, Dik responds. It is not only the traditional cube that is being solved. No, they are in all shapes, such as in pyramid form, but they are also there in all sizes. And there is also a competition to resolve the cube with one hand, or blindfolded.

“The standard cube is three by three. The largest used in competitions is seven by seven by seven. And the greatest ever made is 133 by 133 by 133.” They are also smaller: the program in Meppel also has a competition with a cube of two by two by two. In total there are seventeen different parts that have been approved by the World Cube Association. In Meppel it concerns ten parts.

“A competition consists of two rounds. In the first round, the participants are divided into groups of five. They all get the same one scrambles, The same start setup of the cube. Of these five, the average of the three middle times is taken. So the fastest and slowest time are filtered out. And the fastest of the first round will continue to the second round. Sometimes there is a final with the top 24 after that, but that is also entirely due to the number of participants. “
