Trump has been busy for months to put pressure on the President of the Fed, the US Central Bank, to sharply reduce interest rates. And now he also tries to fire one of the board members, Lisa Cook.
For the time being she can stay, the American Supreme Court determined Wednesday. But if Trump finally succeeds, then this dismissal might mean the end of the independence of the US central bank.
In this episode we want to know how dangerous it is what Trump does here. But we start at the beginning: what central banks actually do, and why is it so important that they do that independently? When do central banks go beyond their mandate? And could it be that central banks have made themselves vulnerable to political interference?
