Mariupol was blocked by March 11. On March 18, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced fighting in the city center. The city authorities reported that social objects of the city were also shelled: a hospital, a maternity hospital, a theater. Russian military department called these are provocations of the Ukrainian side.
Already on March 3, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced a humanitarian catastrophe imminent in Mariupol. March 23, to data departments, almost 82 thousand people were evacuated from Mariupol to Russia. On March 25, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Paris, together with Ankara and Athens, proposes to organize the evacuation of everyone from Mariupol.
