How do you actually pronounce… Dave Gahan?

As long as we listen to music and write about it, but not talk about it publicly like our colleagues on the radio, we have a problem: we sometimes have no idea how to actually pronounce the names of certain bands, solo artists or actors. That started at The Artist Formerly Known As Prince and continued at !!! not up. Fortunately, those affected often provide the explanation themselves (“pronounced: Chk Chk Chk”).

In the case of Depeche Mode and their famous singer, it’s a little different: For over 40 years, everyone here, if over 40 years old, thinks they know this band. When they announced their new album in 2017 and we began to consider dedicating our then current cover story to Depeche Mode, the attentive editorial spy stumbled on an anomaly: with so many people you were also talking about Martin Gore, Andrew Fletcher and Dave Gahan , so many different versions of how the Depeche Mode singer is pronounced. The same observation is piling up again these days, weeks and months as Depeche Mode release a new album and tour with MEMENTO MORI (but without Andrew Fletcher who died in 2022).

Don’t you think so? See for yourself:

Dave Gahan provides the solution at the end of the clip. Hopefully that settles that once and for all.
