Things regularly went wrong at Stek Oost. There have been several violent incidents in recent years, there have been problems with confused status holders and there have been sexual offenses. In 2024, one of the residents was convicted of two rapes of fellow residents.

There have also been several incidents of violence in recent years, drug trafficking and problems with confused status holders. Residents made dozens of reports to manager Stadsgenoot, but felt that the housing association did too little.

Contract

Stadgenoot wanted to stop the housing project in the summer of 2023, but the municipality was against this and decided to hold the housing association to the contract. Carolien de Heer, district chairman of the East, told Zembla: “You cannot put people on the street at once. There are people living there. They cannot all go somewhere else at once.”

It has been agreed that from 2024, only 30 percent of the 250 homes will go to status holders.

Stek Oost, where a total of 250 starters and status holders live together, had to provide an idealistic solution to the housing shortage in Amsterdam. But since its founding in 2018, things quickly went wrong in the apartment complex, which is located on a former training field of Zeeburgia football club.

Been having problems for some time

Previously, in 2022AT5 spoke to two residents who both moved because they felt unsafe in Stek Oost. “You actually live with the constant expectation of: something will happen soon, it has been quiet for too long. Someone will freak out again. How will it be this time?”

Later, AT5 also investigated the situation at other mixed housing projects in the city. This showed that residents generally satisfied with their living situation, but that they sometimes lacked guidance.

Research by Zembla shows that there is still unrest in the housing project. Residents also still feel unsafe. Stek Oost will cease to exist in April 2028.
