Actress Carice Van Houten is best known for her role as Melisandre on the HBO series Game of Thrones. Now she has announced that she will continue to play the red-haired character in the prequel spin-off House Of The Dragon.

Will we see a younger version of Melisandre anytime soon?

Van Houten announced the message indirectly on Instagram. “Just watched House of the Dragon. Just saying Melisandre is centuries old…” she wrote on her Instagram story along with a photo of Melisandre.

She portrayed the “Game of Thrones” character Melisandre, the red-haired priestess, from season two until its end in 2019. In the series, she is hundreds of years old and uses magic to maintain her youthful appearance. Since “House of the Dragon” takes place around 200 years before “Game of Thrones”, it is quite possible that Melisandre is still/already alive at that time. Thus, their wish is not necessarily reprehensible.

Melisandre returned in the final season of Game of Thrones to help Jon Snow and his allies fight the White Walkers. In the final scene where Melisandre completes her assignment, she takes off her red amulet and ages rapidly until she crumbles to dust.

Great success with “House of the Dragon”

Melisandre does not appear in George RR Martin’s Fire and Blood, on which the new spin-off is based. House of the Dragon has been streaming since August 21st. The start of the series was a complete success: according to HBO, almost ten million viewers watched the first episode on the first day of publication – and only in the United States, mind you. In this respect, the spin-off is considered the most successful HBO series to date and even trumps “Game of Thrones”.
