The House of Representatives today approved the bill that adapts Dutch legislation to the European Asylum and Migration Pact. The Netherlands is one step closer to the introduction of the pact, which will come into effect on June 12.
Minister Van den Brink: “This is the most drastic adjustment to Dutch asylum policy in almost thirty years. An important step towards a single European asylum policy and more control over who comes to the Netherlands.”
European Asylum and Migration Pact
The pact introduces a joint asylum system within the European Union. From June 12, the same agreements on asylum will apply in all Member States. The pact will introduce a joint asylum system within the European Union. From June 12, the same agreements on asylum will apply in all Member States.
There will be a mandatory border procedure for asylum seekers who have little chance of protection or pose a risk to public order. This procedure should ensure that it becomes clear more quickly whether someone is entitled to protection within the EU. This makes it possible to work on returns directly from the external border and prevent people from traveling within the EU.
At the same time, national asylum procedures within the EU are becoming more equal. Fixed deadlines will be introduced for processing applications, so that decisions on asylum applications are made faster and in the same way in all Member States.
The Pact also contains agreements on mutual solidarity between countries. This can provide assistance if a Member State comes under pressure. In the near future, we will continue to work together with involved organizations on the successful implementation of the Pact.
