Hot Chip announce new album FREAK OUT/RELEASE – stream song “Down” here

Hot Chip have announced a new album. FREAK OUT/RELEASE, as it is called, is scheduled to be released on August 19, 2022, three years after its predecessor A BATH FULL OF ECSTASY, their seventh and still current record.

As the first harbingers from their eighth album, Owen Clarke, Al Doyle, Joe Goddard, Felix Martin and Alexis Taylor let you hear and see its opener “Down”:

In a press release, Hot Chip said “Down” was the first song the band worked on for the album. It’s based on a looping sample from the Universal Togetherness Band’s “More Than Enough” recorded by Joe Goddard. The video, directed by Douglas Hart and Steve Mackey, combines strobe lights, metal welding, distorted images of the band and a nod to “The Shining”.

FREAK OUT/RELEASE was written and recorded at the band’s newly opened Relax & Enjoy studio in East London. Hot Chip were inspired by their cover of the Beastie Boys classic “Sabotage,” which they regularly perform live. “The idea of losing control is always present in dance music, in a good way,” explains Al Doyle.

Guests were also present at the recording sessions: Canadian rapper Cadence Weapon is said to be on “The Evil That Men Do”, British DJ and musician Lou Hayter on “Hard to Be Funky”. Soulwax are said to have helped out on the title track.

London-based Hot Chip were nominated for a Grammy in 2009 for Best Dance Recording for their 2008 hit single Ready For The Floor.
