After almost four years, Werder Bremen recently separated from Ole Werner. According to media reports, the successor as a trainer has now been determined.
Horst Steffen becomes the new coach of Werder Bremen and successor to Ole Werner. The association confirmed this on Thursday according to media reports. The 56-year-old had recently trained second division club SV Elversberg and had just failed in the relegation against 1. FC Heidenheim.
Now Steffen is becoming a trainer at Werder Bremen – and still fulfills the dream of the Bundesliga. According to media reports, he signs a contract until 2028. Werder should therefore pay a transfer fee of 350,000 euros to SV Elversberg.
The former Bundesliga professional took over the Saarländer in 2018 and initially led them from the Regionalliga Südwest to the 3rd division, then in 2023 to the 2nd Bundesliga. It was only on Monday that he failed with Elversberg in the relegation on the promotion to the upper house, after the SVE lost in added time in the second leg against 1. FC Heidenheim. Previously, Steffen Prussia Münster and Chemnitzer FC.
Steffen’s commitment had emerged in the past few days. The coach of Elversberg is considered a desired solution for the Bremen. He likes to promote young talents – among other things, he looked after Nick Woltemade when he was loaned from Bremen from Bremen to the SVE between 2022 and 2023. The attacker from Stuttgart should now be the focus of top international clubs.
After three and a half years in Bremen, predecessor Werner decided against an extension of the contract. His contract ran until 2026. Although he was valued by fans and in the club, critics accused him of having integrated young players too little. On Monday, he informed the club to the club, and Werder announced the separation from the 37-year-old a day later.
Between Werner and the sporting management around managing director Clemens Fritz, there were apparently differences in the squad composition. In the past three and a half years, Ole Werner had led the club back to the Bundesliga and narrowly missed the qualification for the European Cup twice.
