It’s time again for the weekly Matthijs van Nieuwkerk bash of his former horror sidekick Dieuwke Wynia. This time she says that she had to go through the rain in a prom dress. And it was all his fault…
Dieuwke Wynia worked for many years as editor-in-chief alongside Matthijs van Nieuwkerk at De Wereld Draait Door. It is no secret that she now views the collaboration with different feelings. In an extensive interview with The Morning she once again tells her story about what really happened behind the scenes. Well, according to her…
Good duo
In reality, they were not a good duo at all, according to Dieuwke. “I would go through any fire for Matthijs, but the reverse was not the case.”
They did not cycle to the editorial office together after their weekly lunch. Matthijs jumped on his bike and Dieuwke had to try to follow. “I had to hope that somewhere along the way a traffic light turned red. At some point I stopped cycling after him.”
Stupid
What did Dieuwke think of that? “I just always thought it was so stupid – also for him. There he was alone in the editorial office, and I only three minutes later, while everyone knew we had lunch together. Every time.”
There are more examples, she says. The two also attended the Correspondents’ Dinner together in 2016 with then Prime Minister Mark Rutte. “Rutte was going to make a speech and mention Matthijs, so we had to go to the other side of the city for that dinner immediately after our broadcast.”
Rock solid
That was problematic, according to Dieuwke. “Traffic was at a standstill, after which Matthijs jumped out of the taxi without warning to cover the last hundreds of meters on foot. I had no choice but to walk behind him in high heels and in my evening dress in the pouring rain.”
“I only caught up with him just before the door swung open and the cameras caught our eye. That was so rude, so selfish. But I always thought: oh, that’s how Matthijs is. I think it’s really stupid, but I’m not married to him. I’ll slam the door again tonight and I’m going home. You better be married to him.”
Poor Martha Riemsma. Anyone got a storm umbrella for that girl?
