Hoogeveen falls short in the competition overture against Genemuiden

Hoogeveen was unable to give a suitable follow-up to the beautiful 1-0 cup triumph against De Baronie a week earlier. In the league overture against Genemuiden, the team of new coach Stef Lamberink lost 2-1 at home.

There was nothing to be said about Genemuiden’s victory. It was Hoogeveen in charge in every way. The 2-1 final result did not correspond to the difference in power. The team from the carpet city failed to express the predominance in the score.

,,It was not good on our part, but up to the 0-1 it was still a bit up and down”, Lamberink concluded. “We fell short after that. Especially offensive. We didn’t do enough in the second half.”

Lamberink did not want to use it as an excuse that his team had to start the match with its wings cut short due to injuries and that was to his credit. You just have to deal with that and you shouldn’t complain about it, he thought.

Rehabilitate

That did not alter the fact that the absence of strong holders Menno Heerkes (fracture in toe), Emiel Bijlsma (upper leg) and Levon van Dijk (operated on his ankle last Thursday) in particular made itself felt. Bijlsma is expected back against Hercules next Sunday. Heerkes hopes to be able to play again in about three weeks. Van Dijk has to recover a little longer.

Genemuiden took the lead after just over ten minutes through Mike Reuvers. Hoogeveen, just like Genemuiden making his debut in the third division, was surprised in the switch. Just before that, Sil Kuurman had missed an opportunity for the home club. He missed the ball. Justin Benjamins also got into scoring position, but his fly flew over Hidde Streutker’s goal. These were the only two achievements of the home team in the first half.

Hoogeveen was sloppy in the build-up and not careful enough with the ball. Flowing combinations were omitted. The lines also played too far apart. In particular, there was a gap between the midfield and the attack. In the back, the Drents had their hands full with the attackers of Genemuiden, of whom the physically strong Berwout Beimers, who came over from Harkemase Boys, made the most impression.

Goal in extra time

Genemuiden could have scored one or two more times before the break. Beimers hit the ball just wide after a nice action and Bjorn Klaassens was lucky that Rens van Benthum didn’t punish a gross mistake on his part. He stranded in a one-on-one situation on Stan Meekhof, who had taken his place under the bar again after his holiday. Renzo Hemmes played against De Baronie a week earlier.

For Mike Kriekjes, the 17-year-old attack leader of Hoogeveen, the game was over before the break. Lamberink was forced to take him off in the 39th minute due to an injury. Matthew Benschop was his replacement. Louis Vijfhuizen moved up a few lines after Benschop’s entrance and relieved Kriekjes at the point of the attack. Benschop took the position of Vijfhuizen in the center of the back.

Genemuiden also remained the better team after the restart and accentuated this after an hour with a second goal. Van Benthem put the ball ready for Arend van de Wetering and he gave

Meekhof no chance, 0-2. The team of the former players of HZVV Hidde and Jens Jurn Streutker then left the game finally in the end. Also thanks to Meekhof who made some nice saves. In the extra time, Jamai Kriekjes signed for the 1-2 final score after a nice pass from Jim Veltmaat.
