Home game against Freiburg: BVB coach Terzic is hoping for a return

As of: February 8, 2024 6:03 p.m

Edin Terzic can rely on a number of recovered players at Borussia Dortmund for the Bundesliga game against Freiburg.

The prospect of several comebackers brightened Edin Terzic’s mood. “We have significantly more options than last week. Thank God a lot of players are coming back,” said the Borussia Dortmund coach with relief. The good news comes at the right time for BVB, as the club is in danger of falling out of the targeted Champions League places again if there is another setback on Friday (February 9, 2024) against SC Freiburg.

Injured players return to BVB

Jadon Sancho could also be back in the squad a week after the disappointing zero at 1. FC Heidenheim after recovering from muscular problems, but there are still doubts. “Jadon has been training individually this week, but the plan is that he will do the team training with us this afternoon and also be there for the sweating session tomorrow. After that we will make a decision,” said Terzic on Thursday.

The Englishman, on loan from Manchester United, was missing from the 0-0 draw in the Swabian Alb, like goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, Julian Brandt and Marco Reus. “It was surprising how well the sick boys fit back in and picked up the rhythm,” said Terzic. With the returnees, Terzic is hoping for more class in the offensive, which was shockingly weak in Heidenheim and earned the black and yellow a lot of criticism with a performance to forget.

Terzic: “Team sees criticism as an incentive”

Terzic reported that the team treated the game “very critically” during the week. For the first time in the new year, BVB had dropped points after three wins. Cup winners RB Leipzig are sitting on the Westphalians’ neck in fourth place – the last place that entitles them to take part in the premier class – just one point behind. Terzic urged calm. The team took the criticism “to heart and as an incentive,” he assured.

In addition to the recovered players, those in charge at Dortmund were busy with another personnel matter during the week. Thomas Meunier left BVB and the right-back moved to Turkish first division club Trabzonspor on a free transfer. The 32-year-old Belgian still had a contract with BVB until the end of the season, saving several million euros in salary by leaving.
