Hollywood icon Angela Lansbury has died at the age of 96

British actress Angela Lansbury is dead. She died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 96, according to her family. Lansbury began her Hollywood career back in the 1940’s during the “Golden Age” of Hollywood. She is best known internationally for her leading role in the US crime series Murder is Her Hobby.

“The children of Dame Angela Lansbury are saddened to announce that their mother passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Los Angeles today, Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at 1:30 am, just five days before her 97th birthday .Birthday,” the family shared.

Lansbury was born in London in 1925. She began her acting career in New York, where she had moved with her mother after the start of World War II. Even though she initially played mainly supporting roles, she received Oscar nominations for her first films: for her performances in the thriller “Gaslight” (German: “The House of Lady Alquist”) (1940) and “The Picture of Dorian Gray” (1945 ) she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. In 1966 she landed the lead role in the Broadway musical Mame.

In Her Hobby (1984-1996), Lansbury played crime writer Jessica Fletcher, who spends her free time investigating crimes. In the 1990s she had speaking roles in the original English version of the animated films Beauty and the Beast (1991) and Anastasia (1997). She remained active as an actress even in old age: She made a final cameo appearance in 2022 in Rian Johnson’s crime thriller sequel “Knives Out: Glass Onion”.
