To be sure of an airplane seat, Dutch holidaymakers avoid Schiphol, which is plagued by personnel problems. Maastricht Aachen Airport (MAA) welcomes additional travelers with open arms.
Air travel from Eindhoven, Düsseldorf and Rotterdam is very popular on booking sites. MAA and the airport in Groningen raise their hands to help Schiphol out of the fire, it writes AD based on search and booking behavior by consumers.
Booking sites
In the past month there was a lot more clicks on travel from Eindhoven and Rotterdam-The Hague, according to an overview that Travix, owner of the booking sites of Cheaptickets and Vliegwinkel, compiled at the request of the AD. The booking dates for Schiphol differ sharply from this.
Additional staff
The airport in Beek has some space, but is careful. “We are anticipating the possibility that more flights will come to our airport,” a spokeswoman told the AD. According to MAA, the airport is looking for ‘extra staff and also ask partner companies, such as security’. But MAA can only take on additional flights if the airport can also “handle these flights in an orderly manner.”
