Erencan Yardimci faces hostility on social media after his red card in the derby. BTSV keeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann defends the striker vehemently.

After serious insults against Erencan Yardimci on social media, Ron-Thorben Hoffmann jumped to his Eintracht Braunschweig teammate’s side. “Even in difficult moments, we stand together!” wrote the Eintracht goalkeeper in his Instagram story on Monday.

In the Niedersachsensenderby against Hannover 96 on Sunday, Yardimci grabbed his opponent Boris Tomiak’s neck with both hands and was shown a red card for this choking gesture in the 20th minute when the score was 0-0. Being outnumbered, the Braunschweig team had no chance against their arch-rivals, who were much stronger in terms of play, and lost 3-0. The Eintracht striker was then harshly attacked on social media.

A limit was crossed, said Hoffmann. “Eren made a mistake and he knows it! What really pisses me off is how he is now being insulted or treated racistly!” wrote the goalkeeper. “That has no place in football! Criticism is important and we all deserve it together, but please let’s stay objective!”

Coach Heiner Backhaus, who was critical immediately after the game and announced a penalty for Yardimci, also defended his player. “I’m more likely to give him a hug today because he’s the biggest critic of himself,” said the Eintracht coach. “He feels sorry because he is a very level-headed, quiet boy.”

Yardimci is a player “who is totally reflective and often places too much blame on himself. I don’t want this to happen to him more often in his career. He is a player who is on loan from the Bundesliga and who needs this maturation process here. He puts a lot of pressure on himself and definitely wants to play in the Bundesliga again. We have to influence this now in analyzing this and in personal development. Because it can always happen that such a fast player Sometimes things get provoked on the field.”

Yardimci spoke out with a public apology the day after the derby faux pas. Read more about this here. He was suspended for three league games by the DFB sports court.
