The “no thanks” comes after yet another gaffe by Trump, who immediately after the men’s national team won gold in the final against Canada on Sunday evening, called the locker room where the players were celebrating, saying that he absolutely wanted them in Washington. Too bad that during the phone call Trump also said: “I have to get the girls to come too because I would probably be impeached if I didn’t invite them too.” The players’ laughter was loud and a little out of place.

Controversy immediately erupted, combined with the fact that among the players drinking beer and singing there was also the director of the FBI, Kash Patel. There is a video of him online in which he drinks, jumps, rejoices and splashes the athletes. At one point a gold medal also appeared around his neck. On social media, users went wild to comment. The women’s team’s reaction to declining the invitation was more calm and diplomatic: “We are sincerely grateful for the invitation extended to our gold medal-winning women’s ice hockey team and deeply appreciate the recognition of their extraordinary achievement,” a USA Hockey spokesperson said, via Monica Alba of NBC News. “Due to time and academic and professional commitments already scheduled after the Games, the athletes are unable to participate.” In reality it is unlikely that the men will also be present, because the next day, Wednesday, the NHL resumes and all the players will already be with their teams.
