Hitzfeld on his ex-clubs’ duel: “Bayern still favourites”

Munich (dpa) – Before the duel of his former clubs in the Bundesliga, former top coach Ottmar Hitzfeld still sees FC Bayern Munich as the favorite against Borussia Dortmund.

“Bayern have an excellent team and they have made great transfers,” said the 73-year-old on pay TV broadcaster Sky. “It will be an open game, but Bayern are still favourites. But Dortmund can gain a lot in mentality, sympathy and prestige in this game.”

Bayern and BVB meet this Saturday (6.30 p.m. / Sky). With a win against the closest pursuer, Munich can make the tenth German soccer championship in a row perfect early on. Despite their dominance in the Bundesliga, both clubs have fallen short of their claims this season. They were eliminated early in both the Champions League and the DFB Cup.

Nevertheless, Hitzfeld praised Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann. Criticism of Nagelsmann was out of place, said the ex-coach. “You can’t win every game. I think he’s doing a great job and has a great personality. He’s the right coach for this team.”
