“Avatar: Fire and Ash” exceeds the billion mark. James Cameron is now alone at the top: no other director has four such successes.
James Cameron is back at the top of box office success. With “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” the third part of the science fiction series exceeded the $1 billion box office mark worldwide last weekend. The film reached this milestone around three weeks after its theatrical release in mid-December 2025, continuing the commercial success of the “Avatar” franchise.
Billionaire success in three weeks
According to industry sources, “Fire and Ash” has grossed around $303 million in the USA and Canada to date. Another $777 million came from international markets. Overall, the worldwide box office revenue currently amounts to around 1.083 billion US dollars. This means that the film belongs to an exclusive circle: only around 60 productions in cinema history have been able to cross this threshold.
Weaker start than its predecessor
However, compared to its direct predecessor “Avatar: The Way of Water”, the start was a little slower. The second part of the series reached the billion mark after just a few days. “Fire and Ash” needed almost 19 days in North American cinemas, and sometimes even longer in other countries. Nevertheless, industry observers rate the result as a clear success given the high expectations and the film’s long running time.
James Cameron stands alone at the top
The new record has special meaning for James Cameron. The Canadian director is now the only filmmaker to have managed to direct four films that have grossed over $1 billion each. This series includes “Titanic” (2.265 billion dollars), “Avatar – Departure for Pandora” (2.924 billion), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2.343 billion) and now “Avatar: Fire and Ash”.
Speculation about further records
With this balance, Cameron clearly sets himself apart from other successful directing teams, including the Russo brothers, who also celebrated billion-dollar successes with several Marvel films. There is now speculation within the industry as to whether “Fire and Ash” can reach the next sales mark in the coming weeks.
Blockbusters finance deep-sea passion
Aside from the cinema, James Cameron has been using his income for other projects for years. Part of the proceeds go to financing deep-sea expeditions and developing corresponding technologies. His blockbuster films are a good means to an end to earn money for his true passion, ocean exploration, the director told the Daily Telegraph.
The future of the saga depends on success
Cameron himself has emphasized several times that the success of this film will largely determine whether part four and part five will actually be made. “I don’t know if the saga goes beyond that. I hope so,” he told Entertainment Weekly. If “Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5” are not realized, he announced that he would at least make the planned storylines public. The scripts are already available, the 71-year-old reported in an interview with “TV Movie”.
