Highest market values at the end of a career: Hinteregger behind Zidane & Co.

TM database

After the comparatively early and surprising end of Martin Hinteregger’s career, Transfermarkt took a look at the players who had the highest market value at the time they chose to hang up their boots – a little gimmick using the TM database. The 29-year-old Hinteregger ranks fifth in the statistics with 9 million euros. Only Manchester City legend Sergio Agüero, France icon Zinédine Zidane and the two former Bayern Munich players Philipp Lahm and Willy Sagnol were rated higher than the Austrian at the end of their careers.

At the top is Agüero (33 at the end of his career) with 15 million euros. At the end of last year, the Argentine announced in tears that he had to stop. He was forced to take this step by heart problems, which became apparent in his FC Barcelona’s La Liga game against Deportivo Alavés. Just behind him is Zidane, who resigned in 2006 at the age of 34.

Lahm (then 33) followed in third and fourth place with a value of 11 million euros and Sagnol, who at 31 still reached 9.5 million euros. He is closely followed by former world-class player Pavel Nedved, whose personal share was €9m when he retired.

Highest market values at the end of a career: Kahn & Pröpper also in the top eleven

With Oliver Kahn (39), another former Bayern player has made it into the top eleven. Today’s Bayern boss has a market value of EUR 4.5 million. not only the goalkeeper with the highest market value at the end of his career, but also the most valuable over-37 player in this statistic.

The top eleven is completed by former Dutch international Davy Pröpper (30), who announced the end of his career earlier this year. “During my stay abroad, I noticed that I was slowly losing my enthusiasm for football. It was extremely difficult for me to have the necessary discipline to perform at my best and to let my life be completely determined by the busy football schedule,” said the 30-year-old.
