High-speed train derailed in China: dead and several injured | Abroad

A high-speed train derailed in southern China’s Guizhou province. The driver of the train was killed and several passengers were injured, Chinese media reported.

The train, bound for Guangdong province, derailed after it ran over debris at a tunnel, state broadcaster CCTV said. Videos show the locomotive being pulverized by the collision. The rest of the train remained largely intact. The video also shows chaotic scenes in one of the carriages after the accident, with screaming passengers surrounded by their luggage.

According to CCTV, the driver has died. A conductor and seven passengers have been hospitalized, but their lives are not in danger.

Fatal accidents are rare on China’s high-speed network, the largest in the world. In 2011, about 40 people were killed in a similar accident in Wenzhou, near Shanghai.
