The further technological transformation at the Hamburg port logistics company HHLA has direct consequences for employees.
“We as management want to live up to our social responsibility and allay fears through information and exchange,” said the CEO of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), Angela Titzrath, to “Welt am Sonntag” (Hamburg and Northern Germany editorial team). But that also means “that socially acceptable offers are made to those who do not want to go down this path.”
Remotely controllable container cranes are up to 30 percent more productive
Since 2020, the group with around 6,900 employees, 3,600 of them in Hamburg, has been relying on one Digitalization and automation of the terminals. The first 3 of 14 container gantry cranes for the Altenwerder container terminal arrived in mid-December and will in future be controlled remotely from an office. “The remotely controllable container cranes can be up to 30 percent more productive,” said Titzrath.
Such systems are also to be introduced at the Tollerort and Burchardkai terminals. At Burchardkai, HHLA wants to complete the conversion to a so-called block storage system in 2025 – with automatic vehicles instead of the long-legged van carriers, based on the model of the already heavily automated Altenwerder terminal. The first hydrogen-powered van carriers are to be tested at Tollerort.
Titzrath: No redundancies for operational reasons
Titzrath left it unclear what this means for the number of employees at the terminals. “Our transformation program aims to secure long-term employment in the Port of Hamburg.” HHLA wants to develop and train new career profiles. How exactly the number of employees will change also depends on the volume development in Hamburg. “What is certain is that we do not issue any redundancies for operational reasons, but rather provide qualifications and further training for new jobs,” emphasized Titzrath.
