Hertha BSC – Teenager Wollschläger: Devastated, praised by Magath

Bielefeld (dpa) – Most of the colleagues were already in the dressing room when Luca Wollschläger was still sitting on the pitch and kept banging his fist on the Bielefeld lawn.

The 19-year-old had only been a Bundesliga footballer at Hertha BSC for ten minutes when he involuntarily played his way into many annual reviews with Maximilian Mittelstädt. During a counterattack he put the ball on Mittelstädt, who was six years his senior and who put it back instead of shooting into the goal, but Wollschläger had already turned away. Instead of making it 2-0, Hertha conceded the equalizer in added time.

Magath satisfied

Coach veteran Felix Magath, almost 50 years older than his storm discovery, cleared the teenager of any guilt. “I have no idea why he should be crippled,” said Magath. Wollschläger “played a great game on his debut and everything I could have wished for. I was so satisfied with his performance, you can’t even imagine that.”

He gave Mittelstädt the responsibility for the missed big chance. “You have to smile a little at how you can squander such a chance,” said Magath. “I was surprised that in a situation like this you would think of passing the ball across again.”
