Hertha BSC: Richter back in running training after testicular cancer treatment

Three weeks after diagnosis

Marco Richter has resumed running training after successfully undergoing testicular cancer treatment. On Monday, three weeks after the diagnosis, Hertha BSC’s offensive power was back on the pitch. As he explained, he did not want to set a time limit for a return to gaming for the time being. Instead, he wants to be careful and see how he is doing from day to day. “As of now, everything is fine,” emphasized Richter.

A testicular tumor was discovered in Richter before the Hertha training camp in mid-June. “I thought I’d stop by because it had gotten a little more painful,” he said. He was operated on the next day. “Everything went well. I didn’t have any pain afterwards either,” Richter said about the phase after the operation. He didn’t have much time to think, but he didn’t want to let it come to life. “It’s also important for the head,” said the Bavarian, who came to Hertha last summer for a transfer fee of 7.1 million euros from his training club FC Augsburg. According to his own statements, he has to have an MRI scan every three or four months. The risk that something will happen again is small. He can always increase the training, “as long as the scar looks good”. If everything goes on like this, it won’t take that long, Richter said. “We’re not making a prediction as to when he’ll be back in full training or even playing. Marco should take as much time as he needs and take one step at a time,” said Hertha’s sporting director Fredi Bobic recently.

Richter reaffirmed the importance of preventive medical check-ups. “The earlier, the better,” he said, citing the examples of Timo Baumgartl (26) and Sébastien Haller (28). Such diseases used to be a difficult topic in public. Richter, Baumgartl and Haller were and are dealing with it openly. Richter believes that with their reach they would have persuaded many to take the step to the doctor. “I hope that it has caused some people to change their minds,” said the attacker, who scored six goals and two assists in 33 games in his first season with Hertha.
