Munich coach reprimands listless professionals
Hertha coach Felix Magath is concerned about the consequences for the relegation battle in the Bundesliga after FC Bayern’s poor performance at 1. FSV Mainz 05. “FC Bayern are already champions, but I don’t know why a team stops playing three weeks before the end of the season. That doesn’t serve the Bundesliga,” Magath said after his Berliners’ 1-1 draw at Arminia Bielefeld on “Sky”.

Munich, who lost 3-1 in Mainz, will play against VfB Stuttgart next Sunday – one of Hertha’s competitors in the bottom of the table. He “didn’t see the Bayern game and only knew the result from Mainz,” said Magath, who once won the double twice with Bayern. The Berliners play against Mainz on Saturday, with a win Hertha would definitely be saved.

Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann reacted to Magath’s statements on Saturday. “Very clever of him, I don’t think he’ll do it entirely unselfishly,” said the 34-year-old after the game in Mainz. “But he should watch the game and then he can call me. I’m not talking about Hertha’s performance either.”
Nagelsmann counters Magath – FC Bayern must not miss breakeven
Although Nagelsmann admitted that a drop in performance after winning a title is “human”, “we still wear the logo on our chests and then we can’t get nine hundred percent against us from the first minute. That just doesn’t work. When it seems like we need to do some service and the passion isn’t there anymore, we’re at a point where we need to make a change. And that’s where we are right now,” criticized the Bayern coach, who spoke of “general things”.
“When you win seven titles in one year and become champion ten times, at some point you always break even, where you say: ‘We have to do something differently now.’ You can’t always do everything the same way, that’s quite normal. You can’t miss this point,” said Nagelsmann, who didn’t want to publicly reveal the explanation for his team’s poor performance in Mainz. “I’m not telling you that, I’m saying that internally and to the team, but not to you. This is not for the media world.”

National player Joshua Kimmich also sees an increased need for talks and action with Bayern, who failed early in the DFB Cup and in the Champions League and who disappointed again in Mainz. “The performance should make us think. Of course we became German champions last week. Nevertheless, that happened to us far too often this season,” said the midfielder and demanded: “We have to analyze that very clearly so that it doesn’t happen again in the next two games and especially next season.”
