“That’s why we’re happy”

Hertha newcomer Jean-Paul Boëtius does not need chemotherapy after his testicular cancer operation. The midfielder, who underwent surgery a week ago, received the positive results on Friday, as Hertha’s spokesman Max Jung announced at the press conference before the home game against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Sunday (3:30 p.m.). “The international break was very emotional for us with the finding of ‘Djanga’. That’s why we’re happy that the course is similar to that of Marco,” said Hertha coach Sandro Schwarz.

Back in June, Marco Richter was the first Herthaner to have a testicular cancer operation, but he also didn’t need any chemotherapy – in contrast to Bundesliga colleagues Timo Baumgartl from local rivals 1. FC Union and Sébastien Haller from Borussia Dortmund. Baumgartl has already celebrated his comeback, as has Richter, Haller will be out for a while.

In view of the increasing number of cases, the Berlin coaching staff “clearly recommended that all players be examined as a precautionary measure,” said Schwarz, adding: “I did it myself at the beginning of the week.”
