A strong first half was enough for Hertha BSC to win against Dynamo Dresden. Schalke has to cope with a late goal – and fear for the top of the table.

Hertha BSC continues its rising form in the 2nd Bundesliga and also celebrates a victory in the eastern duel with Dynamo Dresden. In front of the home crowd in the Berlin Olympic Stadium, the “Old Lady” won 2-0. Michaël Cuisance with a dream solo in the 13th minute and Fabian Reese with a penalty kick in the second minute of stoppage time in the first half scored the goals for Hertha. In the second half, Dresden tried to make a comeback, but was hardly able to pose a threat.

Hertha is now in eighth place in the table with 17 points, while Dresden remains second to last with seven points. In the parallel game, league leaders FC Schalke suffered a setback and suffered a 2-1 defeat at Karlsruher SC. This means that SC Paderborn can take first place with a win on Sunday against Greuther Fürth. In the third game, 1. FC Nürnberg beat Eintracht Braunschweig 2-1.

Feared clashes between Hertha and Dynamo fans initially failed to materialize. Shortly before the start of the game, several hundred fans from both camps tried to run towards each other on the upper ring. Stewards and police officers intervened.

A police line formed up in front of the east curve with the Hertha Ultras before kick-off. Initially only security personnel stood in front of the Dynamo blocks, but before the break police officers also appeared there.

The Berlin fans were not deterred by the blue and white pyrotechnics at kick-off, even by the police. And after the smoke cleared, Cuisance really heated up the fans. In conjunction with Linus Gechter, who had to leave the field injured 20 minutes later, he put the hosts in the lead with a remarkable goal (13th). In return, after the kick-off, Dynamo captain Niklas Kaufmann failed with a long-range shot past Berlin goalkeeper Tjark Ernst.

The second Hertha goal in injury time of the first half dampened the guests’ hopes. After Claudio Kammerknecht bumped Michał Karbownik, Reese confidently converted the penalty with a shot into the corner and, ironically, was celebrated by his teammates right in front of the Dynamo fans.

Dynamo has been waiting for its second win of the season for eight championship games. For Hertha, it was the third success in a row in the Olympic Stadium after the win on Saturday last week against Fortuna Düsseldorf and the advancement in the DFB Cup on Tuesday against SV Elversberg.
