After 16 years, Ander Herrera is leaving professional European football. The 35-year-old moves to Argentina as a player at an advanced age and joins Boca Juniors. His working paper at Athletic Bilbao had previously been terminated. The Spaniard is coming to the traditional club on a free transfer and has reportedly signed a one-year contract plus an option for a further season.

For Herrera, Argentina is the fourth country in which he is active. He previously had positions in Spain, France and England. He played the most games with 189 each for Bilbao and Manchester United. With the Red Devils, who paid 36 million euros for his services in 2014, he won the Europa League in 2017 and reached his highest career market value of 30 million euros. This has now fallen to 1.5 million euros.
