On September 1, 1985, the Titanic wreck in the North Atlantic was discovered by a team around the American oceanographer Robert Ballard (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution) and French researcher Jean-Louis Michel (iFremer).
The sunken ship is located around 600 km southeast of Newfoundland, around 3,800 meters depth. The wreck was discovered using the remote -controlled underwater vehicle Argo, which was equipped with cameras.
For the first time, the Titanic could actually be localized and photographically documented 40 years ago after the downfall on April 15, 1912. The discovery caused a sensation worldwide and later led to numerous expeditions, documentation and exhibitions with recovered artifacts.
