Weakest team

Heidenheim’s coach Frank Schmidt took his team seriously after the poor performance in the 1:3 defeat in the Conference League at Basaksehir FK. “With very few exceptions, we have to admit that what we set out to do did not work. “We haven’t come close to reaching our minimum performance – with one or two compromises,” said the 50-year-old.

After their sixth competitive defeat in a row, the Heidenheimers are the weakest team in the top leagues. Against Basaksehir, his players were “presented from the first to the last second,” criticized Schmidt, who complained that his team had shown a “non-performance”. But he wanted to let the game sink in first.

“What arguments should I bring now? Everything I would say now would be empty phrases – and I’m not in the mood for that,” explained the FCH coach on the TV station “RTL”. Veteran Norman Theuerkauf (37) also expressed frustration. “It’s not that easy for me to put it into words right now. Of course we are furious and very dissatisfied with the situation, which is really not easy.”

While FCH still occupies a decent 15th place in the Conference League with nine points from the first five matchdays and is therefore on course for the second round, the negative series in the Bundesliga is now reflected in the table. Before the 14th matchday, the Heidenheimers are in the relegation zone and the team has been waiting for a win for eight games. On Sunday (3:30 p.m./DAZN) there will be a national duel with VfB Stuttgart.
