WOLFSBURG (dpa-AFX) – Dieter Hecking only received a contract at VfL Wolfsburg until the end of the season. The 61-year-old is supposed to save Lower Saxony from relegation from the Bundesliga. The VW Club (Volkswagen (VW) vz) is second to last in the table and is already four points behind the relegation place. The Lower Saxony team parted ways with coach Daniel Bauer and sports director Peter Christiansen on Sunday.
“It’s all about VfL Wolfsburg now,” said Hecking during his introduction. The experienced coach receives support from former Wolfsburg goalkeeper Diego Benaglio. The 42-year-old, currently a member of the supervisory board at the VW Club, will act as a link between the team and club management and will watch Hecking’s back in the coming weeks. Benaglio became German champion with VfL Wolfsburg in 2009 and won the DFB Cup in 2015 under Hecking.
Important role for Benaglio
“We asked Diego Benaglio to get even closer to the team. He should complete the sporting team,” said Supervisory Board Chairman Sebastian Rudolph. Benaglio is therefore responsible together with Hecking and sports director Pirmin Schwegler. “He’s essentially returning to the pitch so that Dieter Hecking and Pirmin Schwegler can concentrate on exactly what they were brought in for.”
Hecking worked in Wolfsburg from 2013 to 2016 and won the DFB Cup in 2015. “I had my most successful time as a coach here,” said Hecking. The 61-year-old knows how difficult the task is. “Hikel describes it nicely. The situation is not good. Otherwise I wouldn’t be here.”/lar/DP/zb
